Our Mission
Your act of generosity impacts our longevity and how we contribute to our community.
Our Mission
To bring together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry and food insecure on Long Island and, to the best of our ability, provide for the humanitarian needs of our community. Our goals are to improve food security for families, sponsor programs that help families achieve self-sufficiency, and educate the public about the root causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.
Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank has been on a mission to feed Long Islanders facing food insecurity and address its root causes since our founding by the late Harry Chapin in 1980.
To help achieve our goals, we are guided by seven principles:
- Leadership
- Innovation
- Collaboration
- Accountability
- Respect
- Empowerment
- Stewardship
By adhering to these principles, in 2023, we distributed 14 million pounds of food which is the equivalent of 11.5 million meals. But the work is not done, and Long Island Cares is committed to serving Long Island as long as the need is great.
We provide nutritional food and support services for a network of more than 374 community-based member agencies, including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, child care programs, disability organizations, veterans? services programs, and more.
